John Constable Paintings

John Constable oil paintings for sale was a famous British artist who helped the progress of art from the middle ages, through Renaissance into the contemporary art movements that we enjoy today. Constable and Turner shaped the renaissance traditional art styles into a more emotional and colourful world which inspired the rise of impressionism and other famous French artists.

John Constable was helped the rise of landscape paintings, which we take for granted today. In Constable's career, portrait paintings and religious paintings were most frequent but later art fans loved oil paintings of British landscapes and this spread to all the corners of the globe.

Impressionist painters like Monet, Pissarro and Caillebotte brought oil painting reproductions to the forefront in the late 19th century, but it was earlier British romanticist artists like Constable and JMW Turner who laid the groundwork for their considerable success.

Dedham Vale and The Hay Wain are Constable's most famous oil paintings, but he produced many other successful works. Constable's paintings were almost entirely based on this subject matter, and he would only revert to traditional portrait subjects when we required finance for his life and career.

More Constable Antique Oil Paintings of note included Boat-building near Flatford Mill, The Leaping Horse, The Cornfield, Wivenhoe Park, Salisbury Cathedral and The Hay Wain. The Hay Wain, in fact, was originally known as Landscape: Noon but has since become known as the former and is now perhaps Constable's best painting.

John Constable's career is great for anyone who wishes to learn about the very best British art, and in the rise of contemporary art. British artists like John Constable and JMW Turner will always be loved for delivering art which developed movements and they still inspire modern artists today. Constable paintings can still be found in many British and American museums and galleries, most frequently in London.
